The actor and musician Bruce Willis is well known for playing wisecracking or hard-edged characters, usually in stunning action films. He has appeared in more than $2.5 billion dollars of films. Walter Bruce Willis, a West German actor, was born in Idar–Oberstein West Germany on March 19, 1955 to Marlene Kassel (from Carneys Point), and David Andrew Willis (from New Jersey), who lived at a military base in the United States. His family moved to the United States within a short time after the birth of his son. He was raised in Penns Grove (New Jersey) where his mother was a bank clerk and his father was an electrician and worker in a factory. Willis started to take an interest in drama arts while in high school. He was "discovered" as a bartender in an New York City cafe. In the following years, he appeared in several off-Broadway productions. He was working as a bartender one night when a casting director saw his style and asked him to be an bartender in a short movie. Willis was a part of numerous auditions, before being cast in the well-known romantic comedy, Moonlighting (1985), as David Addison. His sarcastic and wisecracking P.I. Some view it as an exercise to practice for Willis the role he played in Die Hard (1988), where he single-handedly defeated the gang of thieves from the Los Angeles skyscraper. He reprised the role of McClane in the follow-up film, Die Hard 2 (1990) that was set at snowbound Washington's Dulles International Airport as a group of rebellious Special Forces soldiers seek to return a corrupt South American general. The film's outstanding box-office results led to an sequel to Die Hard with bloodshed (1995). This time, Samuel L. Jackson starred as a cynical Harlem shopkeeper who was accidentally forced to assist McClane in the aftermath of a terrorist attack on a scorching New York City day.
